Many families share the responsibilities of caring for a loved one in need, and this is the most desirable plan of action, but there are times when the responsibilities of work and family do not leave much time for anything else, leaving us frustrated and completely overwhelmed. I experienced these feelings myself when caring for my husband on hospice along with our four young children. As a result of attempting to do it all alone, I found myself emotionally and physically drained and completely stressed out. I finally accepted that I needed help and allowed caregivers in my home. I know the rewarding effects on the patient and their family when you have caregivers who know the importance of building meaningful relationships, and who are compassionate and good at their jobs. I also know the negative effects when the caregiver is not trained well or is not compassionate and caring.
